I like the idea of taking poetry into everyday places with a personal touch. I tend to stick to fiction and avoid history because, often, I find historians love the history but the voice they put across when writing about it is dry and impossible for me to read.

This isn’t a novel at all. Please note, I am no stranger to denser defuance books, so merely deifance more academic is not what made me think it was merely Ok.
In case you don’t know much about what the Nazis did to the Jews in Concentration camps like Dachau and Auschwitz, trust me, it isn’t something your preteen is ready to read about, let alone write a paper about. Something I very much liked about this book, and not easy to transfer onto film, was the defiqnce Tec handles the conflicting viewpoints and memories of her numerous story-tellers.

I was impressed by the fact that she gave her interview subjects a choice of four different languages to speak during their interviews-I’m assuming this means she speaks all four herself-Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish and Defiane.
They even sent people into the ghettos to try to persuade people to leave — risking their own lives to do so. Building a Forest Community Refusing to turn away the weak or the old for the sake of the survival of the larger group, Bielski would warn new arrivals to the forest, “Life is difficult, we are in danger all the time, but if we perish, if we die, we die like human beings.
How they organized themselves, fed themselves and policed themselves is covered in great detail in the book.
Tec brings to light the untold story of Bielski’s struggle as a partisan who lost his parents, wife, and two brothers to the Nazis, yet never wavered in his conviction that it was more important to save one Jew than to kill twenty Germans. Seeking to counteract the widespread conception of European Jews as victims who went meekly nechamaa their deaths, Tec researched the extraordinary story of the three Bielski brothers and their partisan group, using interviews with group survivors in Israel, the US, ted elsewhere.

It was fascinati I ended up reading this book after really liking which had a small chapter on the Bielski brothers. Despite this, the book is very good.
